This is the method of raising food for their clownfish fry, but we will describe what has worked for us Newly hatched clownfish fry need to eat some where around 1000 rotifers a day in order to form properly and thrive. In order to support the large amounts of rotifers needed to feed clownfish fry, you will need to raise them yourself. In order tomaintain a rotifer population you will need green water. Live saltwater rotifers can be purchased online, but the price can really get high. The overnight shipping is really crazy, so just grow your own.

For this setup you will need a few things like a culture of saltwater micro algae, some prefer Nannochloropsis. You may be able to get these cultures local fish store or you can order them online. The cultures we have got arrive dry in little petri dishes. You first pour sterile saltwater into the petri dish to get the algae to start growing, completely covering the algae culture. You can obtain sterile saltwater one of two ways. You can use distilled water from the store or you can simply microwave premixed aged saltwater for about 7 to 9 minutes depends on the microwave. Next you pour the water into the petri dish, first make sure it has cooled down to room temperature.

Once you have added the water the dish should be covered and left under the lights for the next 24 hours. After this the algae can be scraped off of the dish. We have found using a sterile Q-tip work just fine, into a 2 liter bottle or two 1 liter bottles of sterile saltwater. For the best results you need to have the water aerated. This bottle(s) should be placed under both a white and actinic light for the best algae growth. The algae should have light for at least 12 hours a day. One of the best ways to aerate is done in the following manner: The use of a glass bead air stones that produces course bubbles. If you try to use the wooden air stone it produces bubbles that are too fine and it can damage the algae cells which will hinder reproduction of the algae. The air stone needs to be placed at the center bottom of the bottle(s) and should be connected to rigid airline tubing. Flexible tubing can be used to connect the rigid tubing to the air pump. If you can not aerate the water, you will need to stir it for a min. of at least twice a day.

To make this simpler you need to have more bottles set up at the same time. This way you are sure to have enough to keep it growing and still have enough to feed the fry. You can connect several bottles together with a gang way valve connection. Then you can either start new bottles the same way as you started or you can use a portion of the first bottle’s contents after it has matured. Everyday we fed each of our rotifer tanks 1/2 bottle of green water for the smaller tank but for our new bigger tank we fed 1 bottle a day. You can leave a cup of water in the bottle and then you can begin a new green water culture in the same bottle. This is simply done by adding more sterile saltwater. We have read that some use a fertilizer called Micro-Algae Grow to aid the algae in its growth.

When first trying to learn to raise clownfish fry we had a very hard time finding any detailed information any where online or anywhere else that made since to help us, so we thought we would take some time and describe in detail the process of raising these fish to adulthood. This decription is based on our experience and what we have read with False Perculas. Other clownfish breeding patterns will be different slightly from what I have read but not tried.

When you get ready to invest the time and money into the setup of a clownfish hatchery, you will first need to get a mated pair of clownfish or get them while they are young and let them pick who they will be and love. If you are going with a pair that is already paired it is better to introduce both fish to the tank at the same time, but a second clown can be introduced later into a tank. If the new is clown smaller than the first one. The larger fish will be the egg laying female and the smaller fish will be the male.

When the two Ocellaris clownfish are comfortable with each other they should begin mating. (Depending on the mood). lol. This will typically takes place in the evening a couple of hours before the lights go out. Once this has begun they will usually continue to mate every two weeks or so. You should notice that the female’s belly will be extended for a few days before she actually lays the eggs. Then you should also notice that both fish will be cleaning a nearby rock on which to lay their eggs.

If your tank is kept inbetween 78-82 degrees the eggs will hatch in about 8 days. When the eggs are initially laid they will first appear orange in color. Then they will change to and become more purple in color and then change to a more silver look. Once this happens hatching is usually imminent. Hatching usually will occur a couple of hours after the tank’s lights go out.

I have read that there are two different ways to collect the fry. The first method we have found does not work very well. Is to remove the rock that the clowns have laid their eggs on to another tank. Then you have to aerate the rock until hatch. The second method is a little harder if you have to bigger tank. Collect the fry from the main tank after they have hatched. We have used the second method with more success and greater inital survival rate. When collecting them in this manner and it doesn’t stress the mated pair of clownfish like the first method.

If you are trying to collect them in a larger tank. A good tip is to hold a flash light level of the tank. The fry are attracted to the light and this will cause them congregate around it. You can then collect the fry using a small bowl or cup. I was told not use a net because this can and will damage the fragile fry. Once they are collected you can move them to a nursery tank.

Since in the home tank they dont have as many predators. They do not need the protection of the anemone. They will a lot of the times take a coral as home just the same as the anemone and it is a lot easier to raise and take care of.

2) They are semi-aggressive towards other tank mates.

They don’t get along well with clownfish or other dosile tank mates. They are a little over protective of there space. Some say if you introduce them all at the same time that they will get along fine but I have found this not to be true in all accounts. They are good in small groups like 4 maybe 5 that way there is one female and one breeding male and some males to take there place in case something happens to either one of them.

3) They all do well in reef tanks. Clowns love to play and hide in the rocks and caves.

Clownfish like to have places where they can feel safe and not have to worry about being attacked. This also gives them a place to were they can lay their eggs. They love swiming thru the rocks chasing other fish.

4) The size of the tank.

It is a good idea to have a tank that is at least 20 gallons with the smallest clownfish and at least a 30 gallon for the rest. These are is if there is only one of that fish in the tank. If you have two or more then you need to double the size of the tank. You need to think the smallest one will be around 2-3 inches full grown and the largest will be 6-7 inchs. A good rule of thumb is get the biggest tank you can afford and then think about the fish you would like to have. In the long run it will save you alot of work and worry.

5) The tank rasied are more hardy.

When the clownfish are caught in the wild there have more disease. The tank raised clowns have most of the time have these problems get breed out of them. The main difference maybe in there coloring and there size. When you buy them tank rasied you are also helping keep the wild one wild and are doing your part in saving the reefs.

6) When they are mated they will spawn.

After you have a mated pair of clownfish they will spawn regularly. It is usually every time the moon changes.
