Facts on clownfish
Here are some facts on this wounderful fish. This is not to just one type of clownfish it is a little about them all. Some things are different between the different types.
1) They all can either live with or without an anemone.
Since in the home tank they dont have as many predators. They do not need the protection of the anemone. They will a lot of the times take a coral as home just the same as the anemone and it is a lot easier to raise and take care of.
2) They are semi-aggressive towards other tank mates.
They don’t get along well with clownfish or other dosile tank mates. They are a little over protective of there space. Some say if you introduce them all at the same time that they will get along fine but I have found this not to be true in all accounts. They are good in small groups like 4 maybe 5 that way there is one female and one breeding male and some males to take there place in case something happens to either one of them.
3) They all do well in reef tanks. Clowns love to play and hide in the rocks and caves.
Clownfish like to have places where they can feel safe and not have to worry about being attacked. This also gives them a place to were they can lay their eggs. They love swiming thru the rocks chasing other fish.
4) The size of the tank.
It is a good idea to have a tank that is at least 20 gallons with the smallest clownfish and at least a 30 gallon for the rest. These are is if there is only one of that fish in the tank. If you have two or more then you need to double the size of the tank. You need to think the smallest one will be around 2-3 inches full grown and the largest will be 6-7 inchs. A good rule of thumb is get the biggest tank you can afford and then think about the fish you would like to have. In the long run it will save you alot of work and worry.
5) The tank rasied are more hardy.
When the clownfish are caught in the wild there have more disease. The tank raised clowns have most of the time have these problems get breed out of them. The main difference maybe in there coloring and there size. When you buy them tank rasied you are also helping keep the wild one wild and are doing your part in saving the reefs.
6) When they are mated they will spawn.
After you have a mated pair of clownfish they will spawn regularly. It is usually every time the moon changes.
